What is a portal?
A portal is a website with tools that can be used to create, manage, access, and share geospatial content and data. With a portal, you can host many different types of content that you can use to build applications such as web maps, web scenes, hosted layers, and data services. It also supports hosting other types of content such as files, low-code/no-code applications, and Python notebooks.
What can you do with a portal?
As a developer, you can use a portal to:
- Create and share web apps by configuring templates and using low-code/no-code app builders.
- Accessing the low-code/no-code app builders to create and share web apps.
- Create, manage, and share content and data services for your applications.
- Authenticate apps and users, and control access to your geospatial content.
- Create and host data services such as feature services, vector tile services, and other services for use in your applications.
- Access the portal service to build applications that use your content and data services.
Types of portals
ArcGIS portals are hosted in the cloud or on-premises. ArcGIS Location Platform, ArcGIS Online, and ArcGIS Enterprise all include portals which you can use to authenticate your apps and users, create or manage content, and control access to that content.
Organization
An organization is a group of members who share access to a portal. Organizations can be public or private, and can be used to manage and share content and data. Organizations can be created in ArcGIS Online, ArcGIS Enterprise, and ArcGIS Location Platform.
An organization can consist of either a single user or multiple users. In ArcGIS Online and ArcGIS Enterprise, organizations support multiple users, also known as multi-user organizations. When a developer signs up for ArcGIS Location Platform, they are the only user in their organization.
Portal components
A portal consists of several components that allow you to manage and share geospatial content. Some of the key components include:
- Content items: Items that you create, upload, or share in your portal. Items can include web maps, web scenes, data layers, and other types of content.
- Groups: A way to organize and share content with specific members of your organization.
- Users: Members of your organization who can access and work with content in your portal.
- **Privileges: A way to control what users can do in your organization.
- Settings: Configuration options that control how your portal works.
Portal capabilities
Portals provide capabilities that you can use to build and manage your applications. Some of the key capabilities include:
- Tools for creating, managing, and sharing content and data services.
- Security and authentication for your applications and users.
- Content management tools for organizing and sharing content with groups.
- Data services for hosting and sharing data with your applications.
- Low-code/no-code app builders for creating and sharing web apps.
