ahead-of-time workflow

The ahead-of-time workflow is an offline workflow where a web map author defines geographic regions of a web map to be used offline. These regions are called offline map areas, and are defined using ArcGIS.com or an ArcGIS Enterprise portal. Each offline map area results in an offline map which is hosted and ready for download. An application built with one of the ArcGIS Maps SDKs for Native Apps can download the offline map when connected to a network for use offline. The offline map can be updated according to a regular schedule configured by the web map author. This workflow is sometimes also referred to as the preplanned workflow.
