A hosted layer is an item in a portal that contains the properties and settings for a hosted data service or a layer in a hosted data service. A hosted layer is used to manage the properties of the item and the hosted data service settings. The most common types of hosted layers are hosted feature layers, hosted vector tile layers, and hosted image tile layers. Hosted layers are created using data management tools to import, create, or convert data. The type of data service associated with a hosted layer depends upon the type of the hosted layer. Client applications access data associated with a hosted layer through its item ID or data service URL.
